The Wines of the Abruzzo Region

Located in central-southern Italy, Abruzzo extends from the heart of the Apennines to the Adriatic Sea, on a mainly mountainous and wild territory. In the high mountains, between pristine peaks and rocky walls, there are tourist resorts and areas equipped for skiing and winter sports, such as Pescasseroli, Rivisondoli and Roccaraso. The wine-growing area in the Abruzzo region is concentrated in particular on the coastal hill and in some hilly areas of the interior. The region is surmounted by the mountain range from the eastern Abruzzo Apennines whose Monti della Laga, Maiella and Gran Sasso, which rise not far from the sea, mark a clear climatic division between the internal areas and the maritime belt, protecting the latter from humid air masses from the Tyrrhenian Sea. The permeable and dry soil, the climate, the protection of cold and humid winds are very favorable conditions for Abruzzo's viticulture, from whose cultivation excellent quality wines are produced which go well with traditional local dishes.

Climate, Territory and Cultivation systems of the vine

The Mediterranean and Continental climates determine the weather conditions of Abruzzo. The first concerns the hilly and coastal belt, while the second the internal areas. With regard to the massifs of the Central Apennines, Majella and Gran Sasso take on the important function of repairing the eastern side of the region from cold winter climates. In summer, on the other hand, especially in the internal areas and in the foothills, decisive temperature excursions are beneficial to the ripening of the grapes, imparting their characteristic aromas.

The Calcareous-clayey soils that include the production areas located in the hilly part are characterized by the breezes coming from the Apennine mountains and the sea. These lands are particularly ideal for the production of structured wines and, in relation to the Montepulciano grape variety, they give the opportunity to best express its potential. The sandy-clayey soils, located in the hilly area near the coast and characterized by a milder climate, are particularly suitable for the cultivation of white berried grapes.

Among the vine cultivation systems practiced in Abruzzo, the Pergola Abruzzese shape, an ancient system recently reevaluated, and other spurred cordon and GDC (Geneve Double Courtain) forms.
